reMASTERED

SEPT 1 2025 - JAN 15 2026
OPENING RECEPTION OCT 19, 12-6PM

These four paintings key works are central to the reMastered exhibition at Mana Contemporary, a series of over two hundred record album paintings exploring the intersection of image, music, and cultural memory.

Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation, revisits Gerhard Richter’s Candle—the painting used for the band’s original cover. In 2012, Lahav discovered a rare Russian bootleg of the album featuring a generic candle image in its place. This layered play between authenticity, reproduction, and cultural resonance has become a defining theme in Lahav’s work.

Lizzo’s Cuz I Love You, reflects Lahav’s engagement with contemporary pop culture and the shifting landscape of image-making today.

Rodgers and Hart: Smash Hits, honors the first illustrated album cover, designed by Alex Steinweiss in 1939. When Columbia Records replaced their plain sleeves with Steinweiss’s artwork, sales rose by 30%, revealing the deep link between visual storytelling and capitalism in the 20th century.

James P. Johnson’s Stomps Rag, once part of Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner’s personal record collection, connects the lineage of modern painting to the rhythms of early jazz. Since early 2024, Lahav has been working with archives of artists such as Pollock, Francis Bacon, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Sol LeWitt to uncover their “secret” listening histories.

Across the series, each painting tells both a cultural and personal story. Transformed through Lahav’s hand into intimate gouache paintings, these works extend shared narratives and position Lahav as both cultural preservationist and participant in the ongoing dialogue of contemporary art history.
