MANA CONTEMPORARY

reMASTERED

Sept 26 2025 - Jan 15 2026

reMastered, Jac Lahav’s solo exhibition at Mana Contemporary, explores the visual side of music producing paintings of iconic record album covers that evoke the emotional power of sound, memory, and artmaking. Mining their personal vinyl collection and the listening habits of art icons, Lahav renders covers in gouache and acrylic, treating each canvas as both icon and portal. Their fascination began after discovering a Russian bootleg of Sonic Youth’s 1988 album Daydream Nation featuring Gerhard Richter’s painting Kerze (Candle). Richter’s work confronts history through painting and photography; likewise, Lahav examines dialogue with history through a 21st-century lens, tracing the movement of ideas across personal and collective memory, capturing a momentary flicker in time.

reMastered asks: what does it mean to reproduce, by hand, what exists in mass culture? In a world of algorithmic perfection, Lahav’s irregularities assert the continued necessity of human voice and feeling - painting not as duplication but as interpretation.

reMastered considers album covers as sacred objects, flat surfaces pointing beyond themselves to soundscapes, youth, rebellion, and intimacy. Lahav’s paintings recall analog culture record bins, liner notes, and the B side. Here the album cover is where memory and art converge, blurring boundaries between visual and sonic legacies.
