KINTSUGI ("golden joinery") - the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.
The works below combine Lahav's painting practice with his long standing meditation practice. Like Kintsugi, Lahav sees much of his work as an attempt at repairing broken compositions. Furthering the analogy, Kintsugi chooses to highlight or emphasize imperfections, visualizing mends and seams as an additive or an area to celebrate and focus on, rather than reflecting on an absence or sense of missing. In his paintings Lahav references this ancient technique to analyze the idea of loss, synthesis, and improvement through painting.
