These works combine Lahav's painting with his long standing meditation practice. Lahav’s creative process in often reflects an attempt at repairing broken compositions. For this reason these paintings are referencing traditional ceramic techniques of pottery repair.
KINTSUGI ("golden joinery") - the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.
Kintsugi chooses to highlight or emphasize imperfections, visualizing mends and seams as an additive or an area to celebrate and focus on, rather than reflecting on an absence or sense of missing. In his paintings Lahav references this ancient visual device to speak about ideas of loss, synthesis, and improvement through painting.
